Known until as the Danish West Indies , the U. Virgin Islands rise out of the Caribbean waters 1, miles 1, kilometers south of Miami and 40 miles 64 kilometers east of Puerto Rico. They cover a total of square miles. To the north lie the Bahamas , while to the south rests Haiti.

The fauna of the United States Virgin Islands consists of species of birds, 22 species of mammals, species of fish and 7 species of amphibians. The only endemic land mammals are six species of native bats: the greater bulldog bat , Antillean fruit-eating bat , red fruit bat , Brazilian free-tailed bat , velvety free-tailed bat and the Jamaican fruit bat. Some of the nonnative land mammals roaming the islands are the white-tailed deer , small Asian mongoose , goats , feral donkeys , rats, mice, sheep, hogs , dogs and cats. Sea mammals includes numerous species of whales, dolphins, orcas, manatees and dugongs. Some of the currently endangered animals includes the West Indian manatee , Virgin Islands tree boa Epicrates monensis monensis , Saint Croix ground lizard , and the green sea turtle.

If you have several hours at the park, board a safari taxi to some of the scenic overlooks. If you have a full day or more, try the six-hour hike to Reef Bay. Good snorkeling sites include Watermelon Bay, for parrotfish and grunts; Honeymoon Beach and Salmon Bay, for tunicates and star coral; and Salt Pond Bay, for a variety of corals, reef fish, squid, and sea turtles.
